Britain to Strengthen Economic Ties with India

There is no secret that Britain is doing it tough. It is a logical step for Britain to strengthen economic ties with India. Britain has a huge budget deficit and has embarked on tough austerity measures. British GDP growth is expected at 1.2 percent for the year. India by comparison is facing 8.5 percent growth.

Prime Minister David Cameron is looking for Britain to strengthen economic ties with India. India was a former British colony and the major common ground is cricket in modern times. The United States is the largest investor in India, mainly in IT, software and business services. Cameron intends to change all that as he leads a trade delegation to India that dwarfs any since India’s independence.

India has been a standout recovering from the financial crisis and leading the way in innovation in many industries. Millionaires in India along with millionaires in China and Brazil are out pacing Europe. These are the pillars of the BRIC group of nations. Russia is the fourth. Britain is looking to increase trade ties and stimulate economic growth in new areas as the Euro debt crisis bites. Britain has called for action on the stalled free trade agreement between India and the European Union. The BP oil spill in Gulf of Mexico has not helped American ties so the obvious move is the emerging nations. This is what we have seen as Britain moves to strength economic ties with India.

ABOARD USS GEORGE WASHINGTON – U.S. and South Korean warships and helicopters staged anti-submarine maneuvers off the Korean peninsula Monday meant as a warning to Pyongyang that aggression in the region will not be tolerated.

An international investigation blamed the North for the sinking of a South Korean warship that killed 46 sailors in what officials called the worst military attack on the South since the 1950-53 Korean War.

The four-day "Invincible Spirit" exercises involving 20 ships, 200 aircraft and about 8,000 U.S. and South Korean sailors off South Korea's east coast drew threats of retaliation from North Korea, which denies responsibility for the attack on the Cheonan.

Over the East Sea, a formation of fighter jets buzzed across the skies in a thundering wave as a helicopter hovered near a South Korean naval ship.
Second Term Likely For Bernanke

The White House voiced confidence on Sunday the Senate would approve a second term for Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, whose prospects appeared shaky last week, and Senate Democrats hoped to hold the vote this week.

Last week, two Senate Democrats announced their opposition, and uncertainty on Bernanke's confirmation rattled investors, contributing to the worst three-day slide for U.S. stocks in 10 months.

Concerned about the surge of opposition to Bernanke's renomination, President Barack Obama contacted the Democratic Senate leadership on Saturday to make sure there were enough votes.

'The president is very confident that the chairman will be confirmed,' White House senior adviser David Axelrod said on CNN's 'State of the Union' program on Sunday. 'The readings he's getting from his conversations are that Chairman Bernanke will be confirmed.'

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the senator hoped to have a vote to confirm Bernanke this week. Bernanke's term expires at the end of the month.

The Senate's top Republican, Mitch McConnell, also said he expected Bernanke to be approved.

Support slips for Australia PM Rudd

Support for Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has fallen as conservative opponents rally behind a new leader, a leading opinion survey showed on Tuesday, but he remains well-placed to win an election later this year.

The closely-watched Newspoll in the Australian newspaper showed support for Rudd's centre-left Labor had slipped 2 points to 54 percent in the two-party terms that decide elections, while the conservatives were up by the same margin to 46 percent.

Rudd's party is facing setbacks on a promised emissions trading scheme rejected twice by the Senate and due before parliament again in February, as well as a surge in asylum seekers arriving in boats on Australian shores that has divided voters.

Satisfaction with Rudd's performance was down 6 points to 52 percent, while satisfaction with new opposition leader Tony Abbott was at 40 percent, up 4 points following a conservative decision to switch leaders in early December.

Google probing possible inside help on cyber-attack

Google is investigating whether one or more employees may have helped facilitate a cyber-attack that the U.S search giant said it was a victim of in mid-December, two sources told Reuters on Monday.

Google, the world's most popular search engine, said last week it may pull out of the world's biggest Internet market by users after reporting it had been hit by a 'sophisticated' cyber-attack on its network that resulted in theft of its intellectual property.

The sources, who are familiar with the situation, told Reuters that the attack, which targeted people who have access to specific parts of Google networks, may have been facilitated by people working in Google China's office.

'We're not commenting on rumour and speculation. This is an ongoing investigation, and we simply cannot comment on the details,' a Google spokeswoman said.

Security analysts told Reuters the malicious software (malware) used in the Google attack was a modification of a trojan called Hydraq. A trojan is malware that, once inside a computer, allows someone unauthorised access. The sophistication in the attack was in knowing whom to attack, not the malware itself, the analysts said.

Merkel, coalition allies meet to soothe tensions

German Chancellor Angela Merkel met the leaders the two other parties in her coalition on Sunday for what media dubbed a 'crisis meeting' on key policies including tax, but they made no announcements after the talks.

Since the beginning of her second term in October, Merkel's centre-right coalition has been dogged by squabbling between her conservatives, their Bavarian sister party and the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP).

Much of the bickering has centred on tax, with the FDP wanting some 20 billion euros ($28.85 billion) in tax cuts from 2011 or 2012. Many conservatives are more reluctant and want a delay due to Germany's strained public finances.

Coalition sources said the leaders wanted to stick to their coalition agreement to cut taxes, though the timing and planned volume of up to 20 billion euros in further relief would be subject to economic data and tax revenue estimates due in May.

An FDP source said Sunday's 2-1/2 hour meeting was held in 'an excellent atmosphere'.

U.S. Internet giant Google has threatened to shut its China operations after cyber attacks emanating from the country, in response to which Beijing defended its censorship policies.

The case has prompted concern among foreign investors and public calls from U.S. officials for China to safeguard the business environment there, raising questions about the difficulty and risks of doing business in the world's third-largest economy.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMMEDIATE IMPACT FOR OTHER FIRMS?

Heightened awareness of the potential damage from cyber-attacks -- and not just for technology companies.

Google said its investigation into the attack on it in mid-December showed at least 20 other large companies in fields ranging from finance to chemicals were also hit.

That raises the bar in the battle against a long-standing complaint about doing business in China -- intellectual property (IP) theft -- and could prompt them to more vigorously defend their own IP.

Brown makes pitch for UK's Middle Class

Prime Minister Gordon Brown made a pitch for the support of the middle classes in Britain's forthcoming election on Saturday, signalling his party will not swing to the left to try to overtake opposition Conservatives.

In a campaign-style speech, Brown said his ruling Labour Party offered help to a middle class squeezed by recession while the Conservatives would cut their services and benefits.

Brown portrayed Labour as the party of aspiration while he said the centre-right Conservatives -- who want urgent action to cut Britain's 178 billion pound ($291 billion) public deficit -- 'planned a raid on the quality of life of our middle class'.

Opinion polls show the Conservatives with a double-digit lead before an election that Brown must call by June.

Middle-class votes helped Labour, reinvented as the centrist New Labour, win three successive elections. But polls show many in the middle classes are turning their backs on Labour and backing the Conservatives.
